Courage Redefined: Part Two

To live a courageous life is so incredibly simple in concept, but can be difficult in application. In fact, it’s so simple that you might be tempted to laugh as I divulge its meaning. But as I sat before God this past season, over and over again, I found Him reminding me of what true courage is. I now believe living a truly courageous life is two-fold.

True courage is found first in believing God, which means you take Him at His word—and secondly responding in obedience to Him.

Believe and obey. That’s it—nothing more, nothing less. If God says run, I run. If He says walk, I walk. If He says release, I release. That’s it, plain and simple. Believe and obey. Believe again and obey again.

Believe again and obey again. Over and over and over and over—until believing and obeying becomes as natural as breathing in your life.

It’s the only way for God to do the consistently supernatural in our lives. God is the part of the equation that accomplishes the miraculous, not us.

And sometimes, if I’m being honest, that doesn’t seem very glamorous. Yet it’s when we do these two things that God rushes in and does everything that He promised. He saves the day. He rescues. He has no limitations. He is consistently portraying unlimited strength, speed, and stamina, of which I constantly fall short.

Yes, He may use us as vessels to show His power in, but the truly courageous person realizes that it wasn’t by their own merit greatness was accomplished, but by and through the treasure they carry within, found in Jesus alone.

So I’m on this journey with you, learning, as you are, what it means to be truly courageous. And it’s a learning process that is more than worth it.

The beautiful thing about a life built around God’s definition of courage is that no one but God can tell you what courage looks like for you.

If courage is found in obedience, obedience for you often looks different than what obedience is for me. Obedience for you could be walking slowly through this season. Obedience for others could be a full-speed run towards the promise God has given them. Either way, both acts are courageous because they are built on the foundation of believing God, taking Him at His word, and walking in obedience.

Some might not understand your journey, but God does. By basing our lives on what God defines as courageous, it will lift all the weight off our shoulders. God’s burden is easy and light—He wants to do all the heavy lifting for you.

All you’ve got to do is believe and obey. That, my friend, is true courage.

And yes, it is true that sometimes it’s a fight to hang onto what God has spoken in the middle of a world that bombards us with what they think is courageous. Sometimes I want to chuck it all and just go back to embracing my old definition of being colossally courageous by doing what others deem important or significant.

It’s in these moments that a still, small voice reverberates in my heart, reminding me to embrace what God says is truly courageous. To simply and honestly believe God on the journey and to take steps of obedience before Him.

I pray that as you read this book, your view of courage is redefined—or better yet, confirmed.

I pray that God gives you the ability to believe Him with simplicity of faith so that when He speaks to your heart, you act quickly.

I pray that He gives you ears to identify His voice in your daily life.

I pray that He gives you the strength to take steps of obedience in your journey before Him.

I pray that you find a bit of yourselves in the pages you hold within your hands.

I pray that God illuminates your life with the truth of His Word, and that as you seek Him for yourself you will realize that—

True courage doesn’t necessarily lie in the public interpretation of the deed, but rather in the secret places of full obedience.

I pray the same for me as I write. I’m asking God to give me the words to say within these pages and to weave courageous obedience into every facet of my being.

If anything, by the end of these pages you will realize how truly courageous you are, my sweet friend. Not in the eyes of others, but in the eyes of the One who truly matters.

"You are stronger than you think. God has gifted you everything you need to live a courageous life. May your view of true courage be redefined and realigned with God’s view of courage today."
