Final Thoughts on Obedience

I'm taking a bakers-month—like a bakers dozen—on this topic of obedience because it is one of the main foundations in our relationship with God. Personally I can't stress it's importance enough. Jesus said, "if you love Me, you will obey my commandments" (John 14:15). True courage is belief and obedience on repeat in our lives.

With total transparency—and I hope this is freeing to some—there are very few times in life when I have been absolutely, 100% certain about what God wants me to do or the direction I am supposed to take.

Mostly, I’m responding to the Word of God and the gentle nudgings in my heart from God. I don’t know in complete certainty that what I’m about to do is from Jesus, unless it's a black and white issue in scripture, but I think it’s Him. It’s a hunch, a nudge, telling me this is the way I need to go.

I’m learning to embrace this truth and with joyful confidence move forward even if I’m only 80% certain I’ve heard Him. I say that to help you understand this: Don’t doubt that you can hear God. God says in His Word, “My sheep hear My voice” (John 10). That’s not just a statement, that’s a promise.

If you have given your heart to God, He will speak to you and He promises that you will hear His voice. So take time to listen, then move confidently forward.

Use the Word of God as your guide. Implement it into your life. As you read consistently you'll learn to discern His voice above the rest.

One of the sneakiest things the devil wants to do in our lives is to get us to doubt the voice of God. The first known words out of the devil’s mouth are recorded in Genesis 3 is, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

Did. God. Really. Say. Are you seeing this right now? He wanted Eve to doubt the voice of God in her life.

Doubting God’s voice will keep you immovable, impotent, and ineffective.

Constantly swaying back and forth between active obedience and passivity leaves no lasting impact. If the devil can get you to doubt the voice of God, continually dwelling in uncertainty, then he’s got you stuck.

You might be saying, what if I get it wrong? What if I think it’s His voice and it really isn’t?

My sweet friend, then with every mistake we make we will learn to get better together.

We will learn to hear His voice the right way.

A wrong turn doesn’t equal a destroyed destiny.

God has always been in the redeeming business. Trust that He's big enough to work through a wrong turn in your life. If a requirement for loving God and responding in obedience is perfection, then none of us would make it. God takes our mistakes into account and loves us deeply, passionately still.

A wrong turn isn’t the end of the world; it just means we know what way not to go the next time around.

I would rather believe what God is saying in faith—readily, willingly, obediently, even if it means getting it wrong now and again—than stand immovable because of doubt.

And maybe in retrospect we can even learn to laugh at those mistakes, embracing our imperfection with a God-gifted ease and enjoyment.

I think it’s time you and I started taking God at His word. Believe in faith that He is a God who has your best interest at heart. Believe that He loves you endlessly. Believe you have heard His voice and start walking on the path before you. Believe that He can do far more through one act of obedience on your end than you could ever do in a lifetime trying to figure things out. Simply have the courage to obey.

"When I get to the end of my life, I want to look back and see that each year was better than the last. Grounded in God, full of faith, joy, love, hope, peace, and confidence. Because walking in obedience with God doesn't diminish your life with age; it only makes life that much more satisfying."
