Goodness and Mercy

"Surely goodness and mercy will follow me..." Psalm 23:6A

This verse is so rich with meaning so let's start from the beginning and pray that God gives us an understanding heart.

The word goodness (2896) has so many meanings in Hebrew. Here are just a few. Well-pleasing, fruitful, morally correct, proper, beautiful, pleasant, agreeable. It is the same word that God uses in Genesis to declare that what He created was "good." That is the kind of goodness that is following you in life.

The word mercy (2617) in Hebrew indicates kindness, faithfulness, love and goodness. I read in my studies that it's a word that couples God's kindness and faithfulness which in turn are at the foundation for His character and action. It is best known and used in Psalm 136 in a repetitive manner stating that "His mercy endures forever."

That is the kind of mercy that is following you around day in and day out.

And the word follow (7291) means to pursue, chase or hunt. This is crazy. So, God's mercy and goodness isn't just following you around like a lost puppy dog.

God's goodness and mercy are hunting you down. They are in full pursuit of your life.

That is just the good kind of God that we serve.

Enjoy God's pursuit this week,
