Just Turn Aside

Writer: Jamie KlusacekJamie Klusacek

It would be easier for me to brush by moments of pause and ignore the voice of God, especially when it’s not within my designated time to meet with Him. But I am asking God to grant me the ever-so sweet courage to pause in the midst of the everydayness of life.

Just like Moses did in Exodus:

"Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. Then the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire within a bush. As Moses looked, he saw that the bush was on fire but was not consumed. So Moses thought, 'I must go over and look at this remarkable sight. Why isn’t the bush burning up?' When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called out to him from the bush, 'Moses, Moses!' 'Here I am,' he answered.”

-Exodus 3:1-4

Moses was simply doing his unglamorous job, tending stinky sheep, when one day something extraordinary happened. He saw a bush that was burning, yet not consumed. He could have brushed by this moment and moved on with what needed to be done. But he didn’t. He hit pause and drew close to God in the moment.

The Bible says that when God saw that Moses had turned aside to Him, God spoke to Moses.

When God saw that he stopped what he was doing to turn to Him, God spoke and his life was forever altered.

May I always be willing to trade in my mundane for a miraculous moment with Jesus.

It takes courage to step away from what you must get done in order to pause.

It’s so much easier to keep going, brushing by the oh-so-subtle promptings He brings your way.

Yet, like a love-struck teenager, I’m finding my heart longing to pause what I’m doing and take five or ten minutes to lean into His voice and receive His love in the moment.

Just like Moses, I don’t want to mute God’s voice in those moments, but rather, I want to hit pause on my life in order to hear His voice more clearly.

God has moments like this in store for you. He has ways to uniquely get your attention. To love on you and connect with you. Ways to draw you closer to Him. But will you have the courage to pause?

When we allow the business of our days to take priority in our lives, we are unknowingly silencing the voice of God.

Imagine you have a friend who calls you over and over and over. Then they try texting you time and time again, but still you never respond. Eventually that friend will stop texting you.

Months later, you go to their house crying, telling them that you feel disconnected from them. “Why don’t you care about me?” you cry. The friend responds in sincerity: “I do care for you. I care for you deeply. But when you never returned my calls and never answered my texts, I just figured you were too busy.”

In the same way, how many of us go crying to God in crisis moments, yet ignore Him in our day-to-day lives? We can’t expect to have the courage to pause when we never want to answer His calls.

Will you make the decision to let go of the urgent and lean into the essential presence of a God who desperately wants to speak to you in the everydayness of life?

"Have the courage to hit pause for a moment or two today. Lean into God in those moments. I promise you it will be worth it."
