Serving Through Your Actions

The courage to serve means you honor others above yourself. You prefer them. You cherish them as if this were the last day they were to be in your life. You do the unthinkable. You willingly give what is precious to you, in order to bless them.

Make them blush at the value you bestow on them.

“Hello, highly anointed woman of God,” my dear friend said from across the caf. as she smiled ear to ear. She literally encompassed the phrase, “her smile lights up the room.”

I had just arrived at an impromptu breakfast with her. I embraced her in a huge hug that

emphatically said: I never want to let you go. We sat down and looked at the menu.

The waitress cheerily approached the table, pen and paper in hand. “Can I get you all something to drink to start out with?”

“Do you know who this is?” my friend burst out. “This is Jamie Klusacek. She's a world-famous author and she is sitting right here in your cafe. Someday you’re going to read the works she has created.”

I almost choked on my glass of ice water and my face turned a full shade of ruby red. I had the

sudden urge to hide underneath the table.

The waitress looked dumbfounded, as if it was some fault of hers that she didn’t know who I was. “Are you an author, really?” she asked.

“Yes, I am. But I’m not actually world-renowned, not yet anyways. My friend is just being a really great friend right now,” I said apologetically.

“I wish I had friends like that,” she said, then began to explain the specials for the day. As she talked, my mind wandered. I started thinking about how much I loved this friend I was having breakfast with.

Part of the reason why is because, no matter where I am or what I do, she is always bestowing on me honor and preference that I don’t deserve. And that, in turn, makes me want to do the same for her. She is one of the most creative, beautiful, gifted, joyful friends I know, yet every time she sees me she speaks to the destiny within me as if it were already there.

That day, she had brought me a beautifully wrapped gift basket made by her friend and a small group of women who were reading my book, Just Be. They had attached a touching note expressing their thankfulness for me. It was a moment that I will cherish for years to come.

This friend serves me and I don’t even know why. She honors me to the point of embarrassment—and I couldn’t be more honored to call her friend.

Please understand: she does not lay down God’s assignment for her life or her identity in order to serve others. In fact, she is fully dedicated to God’s purpose and plan, specifically for her. She is called, gifted, talented and creative. Completely obedient to His direction. Yet she doesn’t cease to serve.

We must realize that woven within the amazing, jaw-dropping, beyond-belief plan God has for our lives, there will always be a call to serve others.

It’s one of the cords that bind every purpose in our life together. It’s the note played in a symphony that takes your breath away—rooted in love and executed with courage.

Why is it that God has placed His hand on you? Why are you gifted? Why do you have breath in those lungs to praise Him and declare who He is? It’s for a greater purpose than you. Yes, God will use you, but He wants to use you so that your life can bless others and draw them to Him.

"The “why” attached to God's blessing on your life—the "why" attached to serving others—is always greater than your comfort. It's greater than your sphere of influence, nationality, or generation."
