Another way I discern God's voice is to simply listen. The bible says that the Holy Spirit lives inside of us (I Corinthians 3:16). That means that we have all access to hearing God's voice in our hearts even in the midst of our day.
Listen for God speaking directly to your heart.
There are moments in life when I sense God speaking directly to my heart. These are times when I have an unwavering confidence as to the direction God wants me to take.
It may be that God speaks to my heart about blessing another person. There are moments when I’m in the grocery store where I know I need to tell the checkout clerk that God loves them.
Sometimes I’m made aware that a friend is in need and it’s as if God is saying, “Don’t just sit there, get up and show them that I love them.”
Sometimes I’m listening to an inspiring podcast or a beautiful song and God will speak tenderly to my heart in the solitude of my own home, whispering words of love: “I’m with you. I’m for you. I love you. I’ve got this. Your future is good. It is bright and beautiful. Walk in obedience.”
I believe God can speak to your heart. His spirit lives inside of you and He will
“guide you into all truth.” God wants you to know His will and direction for your life and He will use any means necessary to reveal it to you. When He does speak, it may appear unreasonable.
Don’t disregard a nudge from God just because it seems unreasonable.
God doesn’t always work in unreasonable ways. Sometimes what He is asking of me is very reasonable, but many times—more times than I care to admit—He asks me to do things that make absolutely no sense to me. My human brain is confused, yet my heart is willing—and all the while, a smile graces my lips because I know as I move forward in obedience, only He will get the glory.
He tells me to invest more time into an area or person, when in all honesty I have no more time to give. He asks me to release something I’ve already released, asking me to lay it all down again and again. He asks me to hang on to something I was planning on releasing.
I’ll talk myself right out of obedience if I’m not careful, because what He’s asking doesn’t make sense to me. And although His asks don’t always connect with my mortal mind, I’m learning to trust Him beyond my reasoning. Even when I don’t understand, I'm imagining the best. Reminding myself of the rewards of obedience.
"Remember what God says in Isaiah 55, 'For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways." Respond to the gentle nudges from God this week."
