In the blink of an eye, another day has come and gone. I watch you slip your feet out of your fuzzy slippers and replace them with your weathered leather shoes.
I whisper a prayer with bated breath: that God gives you the courage to walk in those shoes in radical obedience and intentional intimacy with Him.
An imaginary crown rests on your head. I don’t know if you can see it, but I do. Glistening sparkles shine in a myriad of reflections across my front room. As you move, the light figures change into a uniquely beautiful collage of colors. The crown is a statement of who you are … of Whose you are and the beauty that lies within you.
As you collect your things, I watch in silence. Admiring the woman you are becoming, the woman you are. Knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that God’s best is before you. Cherishing each moment that we have spent together this afternoon.
I place a warm container of cookies in your hand. I made extra so you could leave with handfuls on purpose as a blessing.
“Some treats for the journey home,” I say warmly as you tuck the cookies into your bag.
“I wish you could stay forever.” I mean it, too. You are like family to me. I wrap you in my arms for one final goodbye hug.
As I do, a solitary tear rolls down my cheek. A happy tear. A thankful tear. An above and beyond blessed tear.
As we say our goodbyes, I’m overwhelmed with the fact that the woman who stands before me is truly courageous. God is with her. God is for her. Nothing He wants to do in her or through her is impossible. No difficulty is insurmountable. She will simply believe and obey.
I open the front door and watch as you make your way to your car. There’s a spring in your step, as if you are leaving a trademarked trail of joy in your wake. You look lighter, freer, and full of hope.
“May God grant us the courage to walk obediently on the road before us,” I say aloud as I wave my final goodbyes from the doorstep.
And in reality, I truly believe He will do just that.
