"The Lord is my Shepherd..." Psalm 23:1a
The term "Yahweh Ra'ah," meaning, "the Lord is my Shepherd," is only used once in the entire Bible. It's found here in Psalm 23.
The word shepherd refers to someone who feeds, leads, protects, tends to and guides his sheep. So when David says that the Lord is his Shepherd he's basically saying that God is his everything. He leads and guides him along the paths of life. He tends to him and protects him in every season. He gives him everything he needs to survive.
He is my Shepherd. He takes ownership of me. The same is true for you. God is carefully looking after you in every area of your life.
And here's something else that is really cool.
The root word for Shepherd in the original Hebrew has this meaning associated with it: a companion or close friend.
So David is saying that God is not just a distant person to him, He is close. He is a friend. He is traveling with him on this journey called life.
Again, the same is true for you. God is near to you. He is looking out for you. He cares for you deeply. Your well-being is His responsibility.
